Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate (XLD) Agar is a growth medium used in microbiology labs to isolate and identify Salmonella and other gram-negative bacteria. It contains ingredients that inhibit the growth of most gram-positive bacteria and allow for the differentiation of lactose-fermenting and non-lactose-fermenting gram-negative bacteria. XLD Agar also contains a pH indicator that changes color in the presence of acid. To use XLD Agar, a small amount of the bacterial sample is transferred to the medium and incubated at the appropriate temperature. The appearance and characteristics of the resulting colonies can be used to identify the bacteria. XLD Agar is commonly used to isolate and identify pathogenic or potentially pathogenic gram-negative bacteria and to monitor bacterial contamination in various settings.
