  • Description

A biological indicator (BI) for an autoclave is a product used to test the efficacy of an autoclave, a device that uses steam under pressure to sterilize equipment and materials. BIs consists of a population of resistant microorganisms that are sealed in a container, such as a vial or a spore strip, and are placed inside the autoclave along with the materials being sterilized. After the sterilization cycle is complete, the BI is removed and the surviving microorganisms are cultured on a growth medium. The presence or absence of microbial growth is then used to determine whether the autoclave has achieved the necessary level of sterilization. BIs are an important tool for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of sterilization processes in a variety of settings, including hospitals, laboratories, and the food industry.

EZTest ® Steam is a self-contained biological indicator consisting of a sealed glass ampoule containing a proprietary soybean-casein digest broth with a pH indicator Bromocresol Purple; a paper carrier inoculated with a sterilizationresistant spore population; both enclosed in a clear polypropylene molded body. When the ampoule is crushed and incubated at the appropriate temperature, the organism will grow. The physical characteristic showing growth is a color change from purple to or toward yellow and/or turbidity.

EZTest Steam is a self-contained biological indicator for use in monitoring the efficacy of 121°C, 132°C, 134°C and 135°C steam sterilization cycles.
